To all my patients, private and Internet.
Truth Telling, Common Sense and Choosing What You Want
Well folks, here we go again. Another summer season is fast approaching and the 50 billion dollar weight loss industry is out to lighten our wallets and promise us the perfect beach bodies. But is it likely that we can achieve the beautiful bodies of that we see on infomercials, and in glossy fashion magazines? Alas, people like other animals come in all shapes and sizes. We cannot all look like movie stars.
As a practicing hypnotherapist and Family Doctor, it pains me to see my patients feel they are inadequate because they don’t look like someone in a magazine or on the big screen. I have seen too many patients fooled by false promises and bad science. And so, I am writing to share a medical truth: There are no “fat burning foods.” There is no pill for our every ill nor a supplement that can keep us young forever. And, sadly the “new, revolutionary products that your doctor doesn’t want you to know about” may harm you. We seem to have lost our connection with common sense, good science, and personal responsibility. We can, however, be fitter and healthier so that we can live well, love others and ourselves, and laugh on this wild ride on our blue planet as we revolve around the sun.
But how? Instead of drinking the Kool-Aid and buying into the idea that everyone can have a perfect body and look young forever choose a different path. Stack the deck in your favor with a healthy life style. Decide realistically what you want and expect regarding your health and your personal happiness and work towards those goals.
Commit to reaching and maintaining a healthy weight. Eat a bit less, choose well what you eat, and be active. Life is stressful and will always be so. Teach yourself how to cope with stress without using food as a salve. Learn, with patience and practice, the best way to enjoy the good moments life offers without angst about your past, or worries about your future. We call it mindfulness, a fancy term for an old idea. Be present for yourself and for your loved ones. Take responsibility for your health behaviors. Do it gradually, slowly, and with realistic expectations. You will still age and you may not have the “perfect” body, but you will feel better, look better, and have more energy.
I’ve partnered with Dr. Jeff Schweitzer, a biologist whose philosophies highlight personal responsibility, compassion and reason, to bring you Calorie Wars: Fat, Fact and Fiction, a short guide to help you take control of your weight and health and lead a better life. Start the New Year well by deciding to begin your journey towards optimum health. It’s my hope that Calorie Wars will help you make sound decisions on how to do so. As I have told my patients for years, “your health is your most precious possession, squander it at your risk.”
I look forward to see you in person at my NY office from June 1-8 and Sept 5-12 either group or private work.

Recently a study in the New England Journal of Medicine by lead author Dr. Frank M. Sacks has received much attention in the main stream media.
The study is designed to answer a simple question: In the long run (2 years after starting a diet) does the type of diet you choose really make a difference? Four types of diets (low fat + average protein, low fat+ high protein, high fat +low average protein, high fat+high protein) were assigned randomly to 4 groups of overweight, non diabetic patients who were judged to be motivated and willing to do 90 minutes of physical activity and attend group counseling sessions.
The study concluded that all four diets produced similar results in those patients who lost weight. In fact what really did seem to matter was the fact that those most successful at weight loss simply consumed fewer calories. Translation, they ate smaller portions. So calories do count far more than the percentage of carbs, fat and protein you consume. And a good way to control calories is to control portion size. That is far more important than fooling yourself by thinking that the composition of the diet will win the day for you!
So two of my Four Simple Rules are validated by the study
Eat Less
Be Active
Now for my other two rules:
Choose well what you eat. As for the composition of your diet, I feel strongly that you should follow a diet which decreases your risk of stroke and heart attack. That is a Mediterranean style diet. Check out this link to learn more: <!–[if supportFields]> SEQ CHAPTER \h \r 1<![endif]–><!–[if supportFields]> <![endif]–>http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/mediterranean-diet/CL00011
This diet is easy, simple, tasty and not hard to follow. But like all diets you must control portion size or you will not succeed in the long run.
And now for my rule four which is usually neglected or ignored:
Cope with stress without using food as a salve. Control your emotional eating and your weight will stabilize.
If you are motivated, I can help you make these four simple rules natural habits which become a part of your life. I look forward to helping you.
Why not come to my weight loss seminar this summer in New York or work with me via video consult.
Best Regards,
Larry Deutsch, M.D

Hi Everyone,
The launch of my New York office was successsful. In my first 3 weeks in the Big Apple, I saw patients for insomnia, stress reduction, anxiety, depression, and weight loss in both group and individual sessions. I thank you for your confidence and support.
I will be back for 3 separate weeks in 2009 and will come sooner should you be able to organize group seminars (you will receive compensation) or if enough individual patients express an interest.
I would like to target two particular topics in the future in addition to my usual work. I would enjoy using hypnosis to teach my pregnant patients to achieve a healthy and joyful natural birthing. Please visit www.drlarry.com to learn more and to try my money back CD.
Smoking is such a horrible habit. It causes much disease and suffering. I have helped many to quit smoking and would like to work with you. Please visit www.drlarry.com to learn more and to try my money back CD.
See you in New York again. Feel free to contact Luba, my secretary, at the toll free number, 877-375-3692 with any questions.
Sincerely,
Larry Deutsch, M.D.
